What is Dysport®?
Like BOTOX®, Dysport® is a neuromodulator. It gently smooths out dynamic wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the small muscle groups that cause them.
When Dysport® is injected into muscle tissue, it blocks the nerve signals that normally tell those muscles to move. This process doesn’t damage skin or muscle tissue in any way, but it does effectively get rid of crow’s feet, frown lines, and other creases that appear when you make facial expressions.
How Long Does Dysport® Last?
Nerve cells have a powerful ability to regenerate. Nerves that are treated with neuromodulators eventually renew themselves and resume functioning normally—that’s why treatments like Dysport® can’t permanently “freeze” any part of the face. If you don’t like the way Dysport® looks on you, you can rest assured that your face will return to its prior state within about four months.
If you do enjoy the many benefits of Dysport®, you can maintain your results with another round of injections once three months has passed. After several Dysport® injection sessions, you’ll notice that your muscles remain in a more relaxed state. This occurs because Dysport® gradually “trains” treated muscles to behave a certain way. At this point, you’ll only need to have Dysport® injections once every six months to stay wrinkle-free.
Research suggests that long-term neuromodulator use may have another important advantage: Controlling dynamic wrinkles reduces stress on the skin by limiting stretching and creasing. Over time, this inhibits the formation of static wrinkles (etched-in lines that remain visible when your face is at rest). Committing to a regular injection schedule can potentially delay the need for more invasive procedures, like facelift surgery.
How Does Dysport® Differ from BOTOX®?
Many of our patients ask us whether Dysport® is better than BOTOX®, but there isn’t a clear-cut answer to this question. Both Dysport® and BOTOX® have unique advantages, so which compound you choose will depend on your individual goals.
One of the primary differences between these two compounds is their time of onset: Dysport® acts more quickly than BOTOX®; our patients report seeing results in as little as two to three days (as compared to five to seven days with BOTOX®). If you’re hoping to look your best for a last-minute event, Dysport® is probably your best option. Some evidence suggests that Dysport® also lasts a bit longer than BOTOX®, particularly after repeated treatments.
In terms of aesthetics, Dysport® produces slightly more subtle results than BOTOX®. This makes it a great choice for younger patients and for patients who are nervous about trying neuromodulators for the first time. What to Expect During Dysport® Treatment
Dysport® treatment is quick, easy, and painless for most patients. Before administering Dysport® injections, we use a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Our patients prefer this approach because they don’t even feel Dysport® being injected. Some providers will mark the injection sites with a felt-tipped pen to ensure flawless precision. Tiny amounts of Dysport® are then injected at the marked locations. The entire treatment process usually only takes 15 minutes, and patients are free to return to all of their normal activities afterwards.
Does Dysport® Have Any Side Effects?
Most people don’t experience any side effects after having Dysport® injections. Like BOTOX®, Dysport® has been used for over 25 years, so we know this compound is very safe. You may notice some slight redness or swelling around your injection sites, but this results from the injection process, not Dysport® itself. You can use a cool compress to treat these symptoms, and they should go away within a few hours.
In rare cases, patients have experienced a mild headache after Dysport® treatment. If this happens to you, feel free to use an over-the-counter pain reliever to restore your comfort. Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours after having Dysport® injections is the best way to prevent headaches, bruising, and swelling.
Combining Dysport® with Complementary Procedures
Though Dysport® creates excellent results on its own, we sometimes recommend combining this treatment with other injectables, like dermal fillers. Dermal fillers amplify facial volume and fill in static wrinkles, effectively lifting and smoothing patients’ facial features. Combining both types of injectables produces comprehensive anti-aging benefits similar to those of a mini facelift.
