Anti-Aging Jackson MS | Improving The Aging Face
Our double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. J. Randall Jordan performs anti-aging treatment and surgical procedures for the residents of Mississippi, including the Jackson, Ridgeland, and Madison areas.
As the overall health of our society improves and the average life span lengthens, many people find themselves feeling younger than they appear. It is understandable then, that more people than ever before are consulting facial plastic surgeons for help in improving the signs of facial aging.
Candidates For Anti-Aging Surgery
We are often asked when is the best time to consider surgery for the aging face. In general, when sagging of the skin and bagging of the eyes are no longer temporary conditions relieved by rest, surgical rejuvenation may be appropriate. This obviously occurs at different ages for different people. Simply put, when one looks in the mirror, and the face no longer matches the inner spirit of youthfulness, consideration could be made for consultation with a plastic surgeon. The decision to have facial rejuvenation surgery is obviously very personal and should not be taken lightly. At Faces, we understand this and are dedicated to assisting you in that decision making process. Be assured that Dr. Jordan will never suggest a surgery you don’t need, nor talk you into a procedure you don’t want. The decision is yours.
Causes Of The Aging Face
The changes that take place in the aging face occur because of several processes. The effect of gravity causes the skin and fatty tissue of the face and neck to sag downwards. The eyebrows are the first to be affected and may become noticeably droopy in the early 30’s. Next, lines are noted extending down from the sides of the nose to beside the corners of the mouth. These are also due to gravity.
Concurrent with these events, the skin begins to lose its elasticity and temporary wrinkles from smiling, laughing and squinting become permanent. In some individuals, the membranes of the lower eyelids weaken and allow fat to protrude out and form bags. Even the top of the nose begins to droop as time goes on. Changes in facial volume also occur at the same time, with loss of fat, muscle and bone. This may lead to a “deflated” look as contrasted to the volume of youth. As soft tissue is lost, wrinkles will become permanent, much as the grape becomes the raisin with loss of volume.
Anti-Aging Non-Surgical and Surgical Treatments
It can be seen then, that depending on the course and extent of the aging process, each individual presents a different set of problems. For all of us, adequate sleep, hydration, exercise, spirituality and a healthy diet should be the first step. In others, little more than an enhanced skin care regimen and attention from one of our aestheticians may suffice. For those with a little more wear and tear, there are many in-office non-surgical treatments that can be helpful in reversing or warding off the signs of aging, such as injectables like BOTOX®™ or one of the many dermal fillers that we use on a daily basis to help our patients look their best.
For those with more extensive changes due to aging, a more aggressive approach may be needed to turn back the clock! This typically involves surgical procedures such as reduction of lower eyelid bulges or elevation of a drooping brow. Cheek and neck lifting can restore sagging tissues to their previous state. Others with more extensive sun damage and sagging skin may require a combination of procedures for optimal results. The addition of laser resurfacing or deep chemical peeling can enhance the results of surgical procedures, or may be used as stand -alone procedures for skin rejuvenation.
