How Does BOTOX® Work?

Many cosmetic skincare and facial treatments seek to reverse or prevent signs of aging by targeting collagen and elastin production, or by using light and heat to target skin pigmentation and sun damage. BOTOX® works in a different way: by targeting the muscles responsible for many of the fine lines and wrinkles that spread across your face as you age.

BOTOX® injections block signals that cause certain muscles to contract in the face. When the muscles temporarily cease contracting, it smooths out wrinkles and lines and makes the facial skin appear softer and far less aged. Because of the way BOTOX® treats wrinkles, it won’t be effective for wrinkles caused by excessive sun damage. Our team of experts will examine your skin closely during your consultation to make sure you get the best cosmetic treatment based on your individual conditions. Some patients may be able to achieve “lifted” looks in areas of their face when BOTOX® is combined with dermal filler treatments. We will discuss the best options for you based on your skin type, facial features and degree of aging.

BOTOX® injections have a wide range of clinical uses, from helping with excessive sweating, to helping stroke patients recover, to treating migraines. Cosmetically, BOTOX® facial injections are used to help improve the appearance of:

  • Forehead lines
  • Bunny lines (wrinkles and lines that form when you scrunch your nose)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Drooping brow
  • Frown lines
  • Smile lines
  • Worry lines that look like the number “11” between your brows

Most people are good candidates for BOTOX®. During your consultation, we’ll ask about your history of medical conditions, any medications you’re currently taking, and allergies. Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant soon, or who are breastfeeding should not have BOTOX® injections.

“First time getting BOTOX® and the Nurse Injector explained everything perfectly. She was precious and the way she administered the injections was absolutely pain free. Ten minutes in the waiting room, 15 minutes getting treatment, total time in and out 30 minutes or less. I’ll be back.” – N.W. – Facebook Review

Frequently Asked Questions About BOTOX®

Many patients are surprised to find BOTOX® injections don’t cause nearly as much discomfort as they’d assumed. You’ll feel a small pinch, and different areas of the face may be more sensitive than others, but in general, discomfort from the injection is minor. Ice or topical anesthetic creams can be applied to the injection site to increase your comfort, but most patients find they simply don’t need any.

The results of your BOTOX® facial injection will typically start appearing after about 5-7 days. The results are not permanent but will last up to 3-4 months. With repeated BOTOX® treatments, the appearance of lines and wrinkles will further diminish as your facial muscles become more accustomed to being relaxed.

BOTOX® is the brand name for a prescription botulinum toxin product called OnabotulinumtoxinA. A company called Allergan USA makes it. There are other botulinum toxin products, including one we carry at our facial plastic surgery practice called Dysport®. Dysport® is very similar to BOTOX® in the way that it works, with the results being much the same. It does, however,  have a faster onset of action: 1-2 days vs 5-7 days.

BOTOX® injection appointments typically take between 10-20 minutes, and there’s virtually no downtime after you leave our office. You may experience some very minor bruising around the injection site, but most patients can go back to work and resume their normal schedule with a few exceptions. Avoid working out or strenuous activity immediately after your BOTOX® appointment, and don’t rub the injection site for at least half a day afterward. Some patients report experiencing short headaches after injections, but this is a rare occurrence.

The cost of BOTOX® varies depending on how many units of the product you need. During your initial consultation with our expert injectors, they will help determine how many units of BOTOX® are necessary to achieve your aesthetic goals and work within your budget.

BOTOX® and dermal fillers effectively complete two different anti-aging tasks, so it’s not a question of which works better—it’s about what you’re hoping to achieve. BOTOX® is a neuromodulator that temporarily disrupts the brain signals to the muscles that cause wrinkles, relaxing them so you can no longer make those repetitive facial expressions.

Dermal fillers are an injectable solution that plumps the area beneath your skin. Rather than stopping the muscles from moving, like BOTOX® does, dermal fillers replace the volume you have lost through the aging process.

If you’re looking to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, BOTOX® is the better option. If you need to replace lost volume or feel like your skin is becoming loose or sagging, dermal fillers are the better option.

Although BOTOX® requires much less time for treatment and recovery and only costs a fraction of the cost of a traditional surgical facelift, it will not make you look like you’ve had a facelift. A facelift is a better option for you if you’re experiencing significant wrinkles and skin sagging and want a longer-lasting improvement. Discussing your concerns and goals with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon will help you decide what treatments you should consider.
