If you’ve researched non-surgical ways to reduce signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, you have probably seen, in addition to BOTOX®, brand names like Daxxify® and Dysport®. With a handful of neurotoxins on the market today, you may wonder how they differ and if one is superior to another. To help you decide, you must understand their differences and how they uniquely target signs of aging. In this blog we will focus specifically on the differences between Daxxify and Dysport®.
Daxxify is different from Dysport® in one primary way. Its formulation uses smaller peptides rather than larger proteins. Continue reading to learn more about these wrinkle fighters and determine the best option for you.
What Are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators, also called neurotoxins, contain a purified protein called botulinum toxin-A. They inhibit the activity of the facial muscles that let you make expressions like squinting and frowning. Over time, habitual facial movements result in lines in the upper third of your face, such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and horizontal forehead furrows. A neuromodulator injection will soften these lines, not freeze your face.
How Do Daxxify®’s Ingredients and Formulation Differ From Dysport®?
All neuromodulators contain a strain of botulinum toxin that relaxes muscles for a prolonged period of time after injections. There is a slight difference between each brand’s formulation, indicated by the prefix before “botulinumtoxinA.”
Dysport® works similarly to BOTOX®; however, Dysport® may take effect several days sooner. Additionally, Dysport® has a smaller molecular size than BOTOX®, which can result in a broader spread of toxin when injected. This characteristic may be beneficial for treating larger areas, but it requires a skilled injector to deliver optimal results.
Daxxify® is the only neuromodulator that uses small peptides instead of the larger proteins in Dysport® or BOTOX®. The small peptide formula more efficiently reaches its destination around the nerves, blocking the nerve signals that tell a muscle to contract.
How Long Do Daxxify® and Dysport® Last?
Like BOTOX®, Dysport® generally lasts up to three to four months, depending on how your skin accepts the treatment. There are many patients, however, whose response is shorter—only 2–3 months. Anecdotally, patients with a high metabolism (think very thin and a runner, for example) are the group who see less longevity. Don’t take this as an excuse not to exercise, though!
Thanks to Daxxify®’s unique formulation, some patients with a positive response may see results lasting up to six months. This is certainly not the case for most patients, however, and many patients, in our experience, do not see a dramatically longer-lasting effect than BOTOX® or Dysport®.
Which Treatment Areas Are Best for Daxxify®, and How Do They Compare with Dysport®?
Daxxify®’s chief purpose is to soften expression lines around the eyes caused by movements like frowning, smiling, or squinting.
In comparison, Dysport® is especially effective for the forehead wrinkles—perhaps because it spreads out more—but this is not known for sure.
How Quickly Will You See Results With Daxxify® vs. Dysport®?
Daxxify®’s results begin to emerge after one or two days. Meanwhile, you’ll notice Dysport® taking effect two to three days after treatment, making it a great choice if you need a last-minute event touch-up.
What Are the Cost Differences Between Daxxify® and Dysport® Treatments?
Daxxify® is slightly costlier than Dysport® treatments but can be more cost-effective in the long run. That’s because most Dysport® patients may need touch-up injections every three to four months, while some patients who respond well to Daxxify® may only require two appointments annually.
Pricing varies by practice and location, but comparing product longevity will help you understand why Daxxify® can be more affordable. Longer-lasting results require fewer treatments to maintain, saving patients time and money.
How Should You Decide Whether to Choose Daxxify® or Dysport® for Your Treatment?
These neuromodulators are uniquely suitable for different purposes. Making an informed decision about neuromodulator treatments requires considering various factors, including cost, maintenance, and expectations. An experienced and knowledgeable injector will be able to guide you in the decision making process.
- Cost: Daxxify® and Dysport® costs will vary based on the units needed, the treatment area, and the provider’s experience. Consider these costs to ensure they fit your budget.
- Effectiveness: If you need a quick fix before an upcoming event like a wedding or class reunion, Dysport® or Daxxify® take less time than BOTOX® to reveal results.
- Results: Discuss your expectations with your provider. Understanding these products provides a temporary improvement, and you will need touch-ups to maintain your results. Consider your schedule and what aligns with your lifestyle. One of the main reasons we would suggest switching to Daxxify® is that if your current neuromodulator is not lasting at least 3 months, then it may be time to try Daxxify®!
